My cousin, Aaron, and his wife, Nicki, were expecting their second daughter this summer. She was born and died March 18. Ivy Rose was memorialized on March 21. Please keep Aaron, Nicki, their 2-year-old daughter Pyper, and their family in your prayers.
An article in their local paper brings attention to Ivy’s death and the all to unfortunate reality of how common it is for many babies. As a way to honor Ivy’s memory, Nicki and family are participating in the March of Dimes March for Babies. Click here if you would like to donate to their team.

I was very shocked and saddened to hear of the death of a lady with whom I used to sing with in the Melodeers. I wasn’t very close to her, but it still hits home when you hear of someone you know dying. Tragically, her death was ruled a suicide. My prayers go out for her family.

I used to be a regular shopper. Love, Love, LOVE to shop. But, ever since taking Financial Peace University with Dave Ramsey, I have been trying to establish and maintain better spending habits. Well, there are still certain products that I like and use that I will run to the mall to acquire. Especially if you have heard some buzz about a oil-free, fragrence-free, non-comedigenic foundation that is supposed to be good for oily, sensitive skin and you want to get a sample rather than shelling out $30+ for the stuff!! So last night, I help Rob get the boys ready for bed, then head out to the Fashion Mall. I get there, walk up to the automatic door, and there is no movement. Hmm, well, the door has been out of commission before, so I just try to pull it open. No dice, the sucker is locked, and so are the other doors. WTF? The last time I was here the mall was open until 9 PM. I looked everywhere outside the door, but I didn’t see any hours posted. So, seeing that Starbucks is still open, I enter and then use their mall entrance. I get into the mall and find that all of the stores have their gates closed. On my way out, I pass by Crate and Barrel, whose hours are listed: 10 -8 PM. Let’s see, I work full time, and spend all of my time outside of work with my boys, which is effective 3 waking hours of any given weekday. Thanks, Simon, for not notifying the media of your hours of operation change, and thanks for making sure that I now effectively am on online only shopper!

I met Dr. Jakubowski when he came to speak to Rose-Hulman alumni at my place of work. He seemed to be a very straight-forward man with a vision of how to sustain Rose-Hulman’s success and blaze a trail for the future. It is concerning to me to see him go. I hope that all is well with him and his family, and that Rose can find a suitable replacement. It was very difficult to fill the shoes of former president, Dr. Samuel Hulbert, and his first successor didn’t work out. I am sure Rose-Hulman’s excellence will continue and wish the best for the successor search.

This week we learned of the passing of a dear member of our extended family. Marty was Rob’s sister’s (Jessica’s) husband’s (Cam’s) sister, which made her my sister-in-law, I believe. She was a fabulous, outgoing, and caring person. She leaves behind a infant daughter and loving husband. Please keep her family in your thoughts and/or prayers.

Nothing like Chicken Curry to “refresh” your sinuses. With the way the weather had been around here and everyone getting sick, I just had to prepare this last night. I gotta love this recipe since it is really quick to make; only the a rotisserie chicken and lite coconut milk are items I don’t regularly have in my pantry. It is even better the next day. Yum!

Historical Reference: Just before our Holiday drive to Minnesota for Christmas 2007, our dog, Duke, got into the trash and ate a bunch of tissue and paper. We were kind enough to choke up a hefty wad of change to have it surgically removed.
The Scene: Morning, in the car pulling out of the driveway to head to school and work.
Sara: Oh, Bummer. Jake, I forgot your homework at home.
Jake: Is it lost?
Sara: No, I think it is on the kitchen table.
Jake: No, mom, I looked. I couldn’t find it.
Sara: Oh well, we will just tell miss Heather that we will bring it in tomorrow.
Jake: No, mom, it is lost. I couldn’t find it. (pauses a few seconds) I think Duke at it.

The Scene: I am in the kitchen making fried egg sandwiches.
Toby: I see! I see! (Read: I want to see what you are making.)
Sara (picks up Toby): See fried eggs.
Toby: Panpakes!
Sara: No, Toby. They are fried eggs.
Toby: Panpakes!!
Sara: No, they look like pancakes, but they are fried eggs.
Toby: PANPAKES!
Sara: OK, they are egg panpakes!
Toby (nodding in a I-told-you-so way): Panpakes!

This is what Toby says to an adult when he wants you to hoist him up and carry him down the stairs.

I had the prevlidge to witness history in the making. The first african-american presient of the United States of America, Barrack Obama’s inauguration. I was actually surprised that my employer broadcast the inauguration on the video bulletin board. They probably figured that people would do it anyway and kill bandwidth so why not supply the masses. This day was so wonderful in so many ways, one of which was for the first time in 8 years seeing the person I voted for take the oath of office. I am always, but on this day more than even, proud to be an American.
